Loretto's tech-savvy restorative care unit to help decrease hospital visits

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Loretto Health is embracing new technology and helping eliminate hospital visits with a new Telestat Restorative Care Unit.

The new unit on Loretto's campus is the first of its kind in Central New York and will eventually include 25 beds.

Patients recovering from cardiac surgery will wear a band and be monitored as nurses get real time information through carts, iPhones and on-site monitors.

This telemedicine technology allows patients recently discharged from a hospital to receive care without being re-admitted to a hospital.

"It's so critically important that we not only we have the RN's who are able to make a continuous assessment in the technology. But the involvement of the doctors and of our hospital partners so that we can work together as a team to make sure that people aren't readmitted," said Loretto President and CEO Kim Townsend.

Nationwide, more than 20 percent of Medicare patients discharged to a skilled nursing facility end up back in a hospital within 30 days.

This unit is expected to significantly lower that percentage. The new unit will open Monday.
